AAC (Advanced Audio Codec) is 24 year old and represents a significant improvement over MP3. M4A is *NOT* an audio format. It's an MPEG-4 Audio Container. It contains formats inside it usually AAC, sometimes ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Codec), occasionally something more esoteric.
