If you want to have it freeplaced, then move the counter out of the way, place the item from the shelf (could also be done without it), and then place the counter into place. You place this shelf down, put your objects on it, shift click and raise it up to the right height and when you go into live mode it goes invisible. It's awesome for cluttering up spaces.
