WebAug 30, 2013 · 6. Mineralogy A mineral is a naturally occurring substance that is solid and stable at room temperature, representable by a chemical formula, and has an ordered atomic structure. It is different from a rock, which can be an aggregate of minerals or non-minerals, and does not have a specific chemical composition. WebIn optical mineralogy and petrography, a thin section (or petrographic thin section) is a thin slice of a rock or mineral sample, prepared in a laboratory, for use with a polarizing petrographic microscope, electron microscope and electron microprobe. A thin sliver of rock is cut from the sample with a diamond saw and ground optically flat.

All of our units have the full Bertrand lens system, complete with a polarizer and an analyzer. Cross polarization can be obtained by turning the polarizer and the analyzer at 90 degrees to each other, which is the ...
WebThe optical properties of minerals are characteristic and serve for mineral identification. The subject of optical mineralogy is extensive and is dealt with in many excellent books (for a partial listing, see “Further reading” at the end of this chapter).
